Recently, we at m+ Design were responsible for the project of The Source Bulk Foods first store in Vancouver. As a commercial design firm in Vancouver, we decided to take the opportunity both to show a little of this work and to address the issue of renovation in commercial buildings.

The Source Bulk Foods in Canada – Commercial Design

The Australian chain focused on organic food, herbs, dried fruits, cereals (all with a zero waste philosophy) The Source Bulk Foods has around 60 stores around the world. They are in Australia and the UK, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore and, more recently, Canada as well.

Speaking specifically about Canadian stores, the first one opened its doors in Toronto in June. And now, in August, it was the turn of the Vancouver store, which is in Kitsilano at 2699 West Broadway. And like any store that is part of a chain, the Vancouver unit needed a project that would fit the entire visual identity and philosophy of the brand – in this specific case, in an existing building. That was the part that was left to m+ Design and which we’ll talk about next.

The m+ Architecture and Commercial Design for The Source Bulk Projects

As much as the building where the store is located already existed, a series of steps had to be taken before the actual design part could be planned. In this case, this list includes construction documentation, building permits, and building code review (VBBL 2019). After that, a whole engineering planning (sprinkler, electrical, mechanical, HVAC) was also necessary, as well as lighting and finishing. This part, in general, is not foreseen by many people who decide to do a renovation on their own – which is why it is important to have the help of specialized professionals.

Nadi Miri, who is the architect responsible for m+ Architecutre, explains that this project represented quite a challenge. That’s because it was necessary to adapt the entire visual and design identity of the company for this specific property. As the structure of the building could not be modified, the m+ Architecutre team had to be creative to fit all the furniture and equipment into that existing space. In addition, this property also needed to undergo plumbing renovations. “We had to pay attention to all these details because all of this had to, of course, also fit into the client’s budget,” she says.

To complete the entire commercial design project, the entire final inspection of the work – to check that everything is within the law and within the client’s requirements – was also in charge of m+ Architecture. And you can see a little more about how the final result was in the images in this post.
